Pokemon Mono Team Series – Dragon Type

Dragons! Skyrim! And More Dragons!

Welcome to the 4th part of an 18 part series where I talk about everything Pokemon. In this week’s entry, we are gonna clash right through the Dragon-Types.

Here is a breakdown on possibly the most overpowered mono-type Pokemon teams out there in terms of stats. So if you like to utterly demolish you opponent and not give any care about the world, I think you would love Dragon-Types. Please be advised that this is more of a just-for-fun team rather than a competitive VGC;

1. Garchomp

Role: Physical Tank (Lead)
Type: Dragon / Ground
Ability: Rough Skin
Item: Rocky Helmet
Nature: Impish
EVs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Spe
Move 1: Stealth Rock
Move 2: Swords Dance
Move 3: Dragon Tail
Move 4: Earthquake

**Garchomp makes a great lead with Stealth Rock + Dragon Tail combo to weaken the opposing team and also serves the purpose of scouting with Dragon Tail alone. Rough Skin + Rocky Helmet threatens physical attackers. And a single use of Swords Dance makes any of Garchomp’s attacks even more fearful.

2. Goodra

Role: Special Tank (Lead)
Type: Dragon
Ability: Sap Sipper
Item: Assault Vest
Nature: Modest
EVs: 248 HP / 248 SpA / 12 Spe
Move 1: Draco Meteor
Move 2: Fire Blast
Move 3: Sludge Bomb
Move 4: Earthquake

**Goodra is your secondary lead if you want to be a lot more aggressive. As an Assault Vest Special Attacker that also serves as a Tank, Goodra can force a lot of switch or even OHKO many hazard setters. Goodra also has a wide coverage thanks to its diverse move pool.

3. Dragonite

Role: Bulky Physical Attacker
Type: Dragon / Flying
Ability: Multiscale
Item: Lum Berry
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Move 1: Roost
Move 2: Extreme Speed
Move 3: Outrage
Move 4: Fire Punch

**A very strong physical attacker that is also pretty bulky due its great stat spread and overly powerful stats in general. The ability Multiscale also reduces damage when at max HP which compliments Roost really well. Extreme Speed also gains STAB after a Roost since it changes your Flying type to Normal type. Outrage is pretty much your go to move which combos nicely with Lum Berry. Fire Punch is just there to counter Ice-Type walls and most Hazard Setters.

4. Mega Altaria

Role: Bulky Support
Type: Dragon / Fairy
Ability: Pixilate
Item: Altarianite
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP / 100 Def / 120 SpD / 36 Spe
Move 1: Heal Bell
Move 2: Return
Move 3: Dragon Dance
Move 4: Tailwind / Safeguard / Roost

**Mega Altaria is extremely underrated and should be more acknowledged for the Support it provides to the team. Dragon Dance + Pixilate allows it to serves its own little niche as a back-up physical attacker that is either capable of weakening or finishing opposing Pokemon. Heal Bell can be used to cure annoying status ailments like freeze or sleep afflicted on Team Members. The secondary support move is open to a lot of options. You could add Roost for further use of Heal Bells or Tailwind to play more aggressive. Safeguard can be used to prevent further status ailments from being inflicted.

5. Hydreigon

Role: Special Attacker
Type: Dark / Dragon
Ability: Levitate
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Move 1: Draco Meteor
Move 2: Flash Cannon
Move 3: Dark Pulse
Move 4: U-Turn

**Every team needs a physical attacker counterpart to cover those that are physically bulky. Hydreigon does work thanks to its high enough SpA combined with Life Orb. Flash Cannon and Dark Pulse allows it to cover opposing Pokemon that your other members cannot.

6. Salamence

Role: All-Out Attacker Troll
Type: Dragon / Flying
Ability: Intimidate
Item: Weakness Policy / Leftovers
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Move 1: Dragon Dance / Hone Claws
Move 2: Dragon Tail
Move 3: Aqua Tail
Move 4: Iron Tail

**The Dragon Team is already full of pseudo legendaries and is pretty competitive… Why not just throw in a little fun with a troll set? Lets Hone Claws and decide to whack them with your tail instead; makes lots of sense. A bulky EV spread allows it to tank some hits and set up 2 Hone Claws to make all your attacks lethal. Weakness Policy + 252 Speed in EV + Jolly nature ensures you OHKO a Pokemon on the revenge.

As a mono Dragon-Type Team, you have nothing to worry about. I mean you are the strongest Type in the game and considered pseudo legendaries. The benefit of playing this team is that you do not actually need to try at all. The team has far superior average stats than any other Types. Your biggest weakness however are Fairies because they are all extremely bulky and their moves are extremely powerful. The team also lacks any solid form of recovery other than Mega Altaria. The team also lacks any form of anti meta like Rapid Spin or Defog. But typically against Hazard Seeters, you would lead with Goodra instead of Garchomp.
