Pokemon Mono Team Series – Fighting Type

Let the crowd rumble! The stage is set! 3-2-1! Fight!

Welcome to the second part of an 18 part series where I talk about everything Pokemon. In this week’s entry, we are gonna pound right through the Fighting-Types.

Here is a breakdown on possibly the most aggressive mono-type Pokemon teams out there. So if you like to punch people down to submission, I think you would love Fighting-Types. Please be advised that this is more of a just-for-fun team rather than a competitive VGC;

1. Mega Gallade

Role: Physical Attacker Lead
Type: Psychic / Fighting
Ability: Inner Focus
Item: Galladite
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Move 1: Zen Headbutt
Move 2: Close Combat
Move 3: Ice Punch
Move 4: Knock Off

**With an extremely high base Atk and a great enough Speed, Mega Gallade is able to sweep through attackers. It is also capable of THKO physically defensive walls with an Adamant nature and a max investment into Atk. Mega Gallade makes a perfect lead because of its ability to either OHKO or THKO without buffs allowing it to mess with the opponent’s momentum, especially Set-up teams.

2. Toxicroak

Role: Bulky Stall
Type: Poison / Fighting
Ability: Poison Touch
Item: Black Sludge
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Atk / 52 Def / 100 SpD
Move 1: Substitute
Move 2: Bulk Up
Move 3: Drain Punch
Move 4: Gunk Shot

**Toxicroak is not really built to stall with its offensive stat spread. However, with the use of Black Sludge and Drain Punch accompanied with Bulk Up and Substitute, Toxicroak can be immensely annoying to kill. The adamant nature is sort of counter-intuitive to being a Stall, but the more Atk you have will result in more HP you gain back through Drain Punch. The strategy here is to poison as much Pokemon through RNG.

3. Breloom

Role: Support Wallbreaker
Type: Grass / Fighting
Ability: Technician
Item: Focus Sash
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Move 1: Spore
Move 2: Bullet Seed
Move 3: Leech Seed
Move 4: Mach Punch

**Breloom is very frail due to its duo typing which is why it needs to either move first or survive one hit. The jolly nature coupled with the EV spread will allow it to move faster than most other Pokemon; Focus Sash is there to ensure it can take a hit. Spore and Leech Seed is mostly used for support, since Leech Seed can act as a Wallbreaker move due to it being capable of draining HP based on a percentage of 12.5%. Bullet Seed and Technician is a must since it bypasses focus sash users and Sturdy.

4. Scrafty

Role: Bulky Stall
Type: Dark / Fighting
Ability: Shed Skin
Item: Chesto Berry
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SpD
Move 1: Bulk Up
Move 2: Rest
Move 3: Amnesia / Torment
Move 4: Knock Off / Drain Punch

**In all honesty, Scrafty is here just to piss the hell off people and make them have a bad day playing Pokemon. Ensure he comes in after Toxicroak and Breloom sets-up or when you know for sure Fairy-Types are all gone. So the strategy here is just to simply beef up, rest, beef up some more, rest, rinse and repeat till they quit. Seriously though, would you want to look at this Pokemon for 50% of your match? Oh, Scrafty is also a great check to psychic types.

5. Lucario

Role: Special Attacker
Type: Fighting / Steel
Ability: Steadfast
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Modest
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Move 1: Aura Sphere
Move 2: Flash Cannon
Move 3: Calm Mind
Move 4: Water Pulse

**Yep, the Special Attacker to counteract the physical attackers, every team needs one. You do not have much of a choice here, Lucario is literally the only viable Special Attacker for Fighting-Types. Aura Sphere and Flash Cannon is pretty much staple on Lucario as it provides STAB. Calm Mind can be swapped with Nasty Plot but I like Calm Mind’s animation better. Water Pulse is great against Fire Types.

6. Conkeldurr

Role: Assault Vest Tank
Type: Fighting
Ability: Guts
Item: Assault Vest
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 100 HP / 58 Atk / 100 Def / 240 SpD / 20 Spe
Move 1: Power-Up Punch
Move 2: Super Power
Move 3: Ice Punch
Move 4: Stone Edge

**In case you fall behind in battle, Conkeldurr is simply there for the purpose of playing defensively and gaining back some momentum. As a tank, his purpose is to absorb some damage and weaken opposing Pokemon. Assault Vest is possibly one of the most dumbest hold items in the game as it is capable of making any Pokemon not Specially Defensive become so. Power-Up Punch is there as utility alongside Super Power. Ice Punch and Stone Edge is for further coverage.

As a mono Fighting-Type Team, you only need to really beat face as fast as possible. The longer the fight lasts, the harder it will get. Fairy-Types are your biggest nightmare as they are extremely bulky and is a hard counter check to your entire team, so make sure you switch into Lucario to take hits or Breloom to set up Spore. Trick Room Teams are also your biggest weakness as they reverse the priority of your entire team which messes with your momentum.

And with that, we end off the Fighting Type Mono Team. Stay tuned for next week, where I talk about Water Types.

  1. You can catch a Ralts from Pokemon ORAS. Make sure to catch a male one, evolve it to Kirlia and use a Dawn Stone to obtain a Gallade. I don’t remember where you get Galladite though.
